Peace Begins With Me.

This past weekend was busy cleaning up the last remnants of winter and preparing for the warmer weather. The doors of the storage shed where opened. “Summer Living” was waiting inside to take its rightful place.

In the shed, my statue of St. Francis smiled out at me and I returned the smile. I lovingly gave St. Francis his spring bath and placed him in the side garden. Without thinking I began singing the words to the Peace Prayer of St. Francis. I estimate that I learned that song about 45 years ago, a testimony to the power of music and memory! Squatting down beside Francis I sang those words again, this time with thought and with heart.

The words became my weekend meditation. They continue to vibrate within my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace:
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love,
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
And where there’s doubt true faith in you.
Make me a channel of your peace:
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope,
Where there is darkness, only light,
And where there’s sadness, ever joy.
O Master, grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved, as to love with all my soul!
Make me a channel of your peace:
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
In giving of ourselves that we receive,
And in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I encourage you to ponder the words of this prayer. Our world is need of PEACE, here and now. Perhaps world peace is one person at a time. Make us channels of your Peace Lord, in our everyday lives, to everyday people. …Let it begin with me.
